Project description

In Russia, there is no clear definition of the notion of sustainable development at the regional level. Sustainable development programmes should therefore be worked out relying on international experience. We may start creating the basics of sustainable, environment-oriented development at the regional level with establishing international sustainable development networks with participation of relevant authorities of Karelia and Finnish administrative units bordering Karelia (e.g., within the EUregio Karelia), and of scientists possessing the greatest experience in the sphere. The process requires wide involvement of the public and dissemination of information about ongoing activities and perspectives.

Central objectives

  1. Strengthening and integrating research institutions into a network together with authorities, large-, medium- and small business, NGOs, educational institutions in order to create the basis for sustainable, environment-oriented development in Karelia with regard to the social, economic and human dimensions;

  2. Activating existing and newly established networks by initiating concrete projects focusing on nature conservation, forest use, utilization of water and mineral resources, economy, cultural heritage preservation, information technologies;

  3. Training experts to work in international projects in the states fields with relevant skills in fund-raising from European foundations and technical assistance programmes;

  4. Dissemination of trustworthy and accurate information about the scientific and educational potential of research and academic institutions of Karelia to be used in projects targeted at sustainable development;

  5. Gaining and disseminating new knowledge about sustainable development in Europe and Karelia achieved through collaborative efforts of science and the society.

Expected benefits

Development of the basis for (programme of) sustainable, environment-oriented development in Karelia as part of the North-European dimension.
